The Green Party has selected Andrew Pointon as Green Party Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Leeds West Constituency in the 2015 General Election.

Andrew Pointon is 42 years old and is married to Tina and has three teenage stepsons. Born and raised in North Staffordshire, he has lived in Leeds since 1990 when he moved here to study. After graduating Andrew experienced a period of unemployment before joining Leeds City Council in 1994, working there on a voluntary basis for the first six months. He obtained a job as an IT Assistant, and during his 20 years working for the authority he has worked his way up the ladder and now manages a small team responsible for testing and releasing software and hardware. Andrew is also a Steward and Branch Officer for the UNISON Leeds local government branch.

Andrew joined the Green Party in 2008 and was elected as the Farnley & Wortley Green Party Secretary in 2010. He has been an active member of the Party throughout the west Leeds wards, leafleting, canvassing, and as one of the volunteer drivers for the Green Party New Year’s Day free bus. In 2010 Andrew was David Blackburn’s election agent during the General Election.

Andrew said of his selection:

“It is a great honour to be selected by my party to stand at the next General Election, and I thank them for giving me this opportunity to try to represent the residents of Leeds West.

When we talk to people on the doorstep, large numbers are telling us they have been badly let down by the three main parties. They say they are fed up with politicians in general. Some have given up voting altogether because of this. People say they want a change but don’t know who to try. Many others say they vote Green because of the work we do and that we are the only party they see doing anything.

The Green Party is a positive change. We have policies to help improve the lives of ordinary people and make sure we pass on a decent planet for our children and grandchildren to live in. Our councillors work hard all year round for you, and know you cannot be taken for granted. If elected I would be just like our local councillors, being there for you all year round not just at election time, representing you in Parliament, sorting out your issues, and trying to get the best for Leeds West.

I have served the people of Leeds for 20 years as a local government officer. I now wish to serve the people of Leeds West in Parliament. The time has come to change the way we have been doing things and change those who have been making the decisions. If you elect Labour, Liberal Democrats, or the Conservatives you will get the same business as usual politics. Greens offer policies for the common good, where fairness replaces greed. We want to look after the 99% not the highest earning 1%  like the other parties do. We need to build a better society based on hope, not on fear. We are in politics for you and the planet, not for ourselves.

Caroline Lucas in Brighton showed that the Green Party can be elected as Members of Parliament, and that we can make real positive change. Voting Green isn’t a wasted vote, it is voting for politics based on principles and trying to make a genuine difference. I ask you over the coming months to consider a different way forward and support me in the General Election, and my Green colleagues in the Local Council Elections in May 2015. Thank you.”

Cllr David Blackburn, Leader of the Green Group on Leeds City Council added:

“I had the honour of standing as the Green Party Prospective Parliamentary Candidate four times and I felt it was now time to pass on the baton to a younger person. I am confident that Andrew would give his all for the constituents of Leeds West and would make a very able hardworking MP who understands their concerns”.
